About the Company
Thanks to data breaches, cybercriminals, and compliance mandates, it’s never been harder or more important to establish trust online. As traditional methods of verification, including simple passwords, knowledge-based authentication, and SMS passcodes have proven vulnerable, governments, regulators, and enterprises are being forced to find more robust, secure, and reliable verification methods to definitively establish identity.
Jumio uses computer vision, artificial machine learning and live verification experts to verify credentials (e.g., passports, drivers licenses, etc.) issued by over 200 countries. This unique combination of technologies helps Jumio to better detect and deter fraud, while also streamlining and simplifying the user experience.View more
Machine Learning: Machine learning (ML) for online identity verification relies on having a large (ideally massive) database of good and bad (i.e. fraudulent) transactions. The larger the dataset, the smarter the algorithms. Because of its history with some of the largest global brands, Jumio has a big head start on its competition because of its 120-million plus database of online verifications.
With GDPR, vendors can only develop specific AI models trained on the data of a given customer and should not leverage data from other customers to create more comprehensive models. Jumio’s compliant machine learning builds in data privacy and security at every stage of the machine learning workflow including initial data capture, ID pre-processing, data tagging, algorithm training and model deployment.
Augmented intelligence: Augmented intelligence is an alternative conceptualization of artificial intelligence that focuses on AI’s assisted role to enhance human intelligence, rather than replace it. Because of Jumio’s rich history and massive database of online identity verifications, we have developed (and continue to refine) smarter, better informed algorithms that tell us whether a government-issued ID is authentic and hasn’t been doctored or digitally manipulated. Since Jumio also relies on human review, augmented intelligence with its built-in feedback loop, is helping us extend our lead as the most accurate identity verification solution on the market.
Liveness Detection: In order to ensure that the person behind an online transaction is live (not a picture) and that the person behind the biometric matches the one identified in the government-issued ID, Jumio has created two flavors of liveness detection: Liveness Detection for Mobile and Liveness Detection for Web. This new functionality has helped online companies minimize fraud and the resulting costs associated with unauthorized transactions, without significantly impacting the customer experience. With Liveness Detection for Mobile, new users are required to follow a small dot on the mobile device screen with their eyes as it moves in a random pattern. As the object is moving on a random basis, this allows us to disqualify photos, printouts and pre-recorded videos from being substituted for a live camera photo. With Live Detection for Web, Jumio simulates liveness detection for businesses that want to also enable identity verification from desktops by enabling users to take and upload pictures using their webcam. End-users are asked to take a picture of themselves with a handwritten note with a custom phrase (e.g. company name) and the current date.
Improved User Experience: Jumio returns additional information about why an ID was rejected (e.g., the picture was taken in poor light) to its business customers in near real-time. These extra details are being used to help their customers course correct (e.g., retake the picture with better lighting) to improve conversion rates and lessen abandonment rates.
Omnichannel Support: Being omnichannel also means supporting API-based, mobile web and native mobile implementations. For companies looking to cast the widest possible net, including some older people who may not be comfortable with newer technology, it just makes sense to ensure that your identity verification solution offers the broadest number of channels to your users.
Definitive Yes or No Answer: For many automated solutions, online verifications fall into three categories—clearly good, clearly bad, and a large middle-ground of gray (or “iffy”) transactions. Most organizations don’t have the personnel or requisite skillset to get a list of suspect transactions. What most companies want, and usually demand, is a definitive “yes” or “no” that tells whether they should accept or reject the user. Jumio delivers a definitive yes or no answer on every verification transaction.
